HOME-STYLE FOOD IN A RUSTIC SETTING
Guests at the newly renovated Gateway Steak & Seafood Restaurant
will find home-style cooking, warm people, a comfortable ambiance
and maybe even a friendly ghost. “We can accommodate anything
you would like. We want everyone to have a positive experience
and come back again,” says Manager Michelle Barnhart. “We
have many regulars. People come back for the good food, the warm
down-home touch and the friendly staff.”
In addition to a regular menu featuring
steaks, seafood, and what many have called the best crabs in the
region, Gateway offers daily specials such as cast-iron fried
chicken, BBQ baby back ribs and slow-roasted roast beef. Everything
is made from scratch, including side dishes like macaroni and
cheese and red roasted mashed potatoes with gravy.
The casual, rustic décor —
complete with three stone fireplaces — brings a warm and
homey touch to the 228-year-old stone building. In addition to
a renovated interior, Gateway recently added a 1,500-square-foot
deck that is perfect for outdoor dining, wedding receptions and
other gatherings.
The building itself has a rich history,
serving as a tavern and private residence since the 1700s. It
was once part of a 20,000-acre estate known as Pleasant Meadow.
This past endures in a ghost the staff calls “Tiny”
—a friendly spirit that plays practical jokes, including
moving pots and pans and spraying water out of the dishwasher.
As impressive as the restaurant’s
heritage and recent makeover are, Gateway is proudest of its cooking.
“Our slogan is ‘bring it on home — granny style,’”
Michelle explains. “Our food is prepared fresh and with
care — reminiscent of going to grandma’s house for
Sunday dinner.”
