The photo at the
top right, taken in 1928, shows the building which
now houses the Gateway Seafood Restaurant on U.S.
40 at Conococheague. The structure was originally
built in 1778 and served as a tavern and a private
residence. It was part of a 20,000-acre estate known
as Pleasant Meadows. Cattleman driving their herds
from Baltimore to Wheeling along the National Pike
would stop there because of easy access to water and
grazing.
